What we found

The old brown overlap panels along the side of this Bletchley garden had had enough. Several were down on the lawn, others were split and leaning, and the run by the house had pulled away from its posts. Once a fence is in that state, propping it up only buys a few months, so the whole line was replaced.

Clearing and setting out

The broken panels and old posts came out first and the line was cleared back to the ground. The new line was then set out from the house to the bottom of the garden before a single post went in, so the run is straight and stays on the boundary.

Concrete posts and gravel boards

New concrete posts were set in concrete along the run, with concrete gravel boards at the base. The gravel boards keep the timber off the wet soil, which is where fences rot first, and concrete posts do not rot at all. That is the part of a fence that decides whether it is still standing in ten years.

The finished fence

New closeboard panels finish the run, from the patio doors to the bottom of the garden, with the short return by the house matched in. Closeboard is the strongest timber fence you can put up in a garden and the photographs show why: solid, tall and straight along the whole line.
