Re-tiling
The old covering comes off, timbers get checked, and the roof is rebuilt with new battens, membrane and tile. Where the existing tiles are sound and you want to keep them, we strip, re-batten and re-lay the originals, which cuts the cost of the job. Here is a tiled re-roof from start to finish, old concrete tiles off and new grey interlocking tiles on.
Dry ridge and dry verge
Mortar ridges crack, let water in and blow off in a gale. We fix ridge and hip tiles mechanically with a dry system that is ventilated and does not rely on sand and cement holding for twenty years.
Tile repairs
Slipped, cracked and missing tiles replaced like for like, valleys cleared and re-laid, and the flashing checked while we are up there, because the tile is rarely the only thing that has gone.

How a tiled roof is laid
- Strip. Old tiles, battens and felt removed and lowered to a skip.
- Timber check. Rafters checked and any rot cut out.
- Membrane. Breathable membrane run from the eaves to the ridge, lapped and fixed.
- Battens. Treated battens set to the gauge of the tile, fixed into every rafter.
- Tiling. Tiles laid and clipped course by course, cut neatly at valleys, chimneys and verges.
- Ridge. Dry ridge and dry verge fitted and the roof photographed.
- Valleys and abutments. Valleys formed in lead or a valley liner and soakers fitted where the roof meets a wall, before the tiles are cut in around them.

Common questions
Can you match my existing tiles?
Usually. Bring us a spare from the loft or we will take one off the roof and match it at the merchant. On discontinued patterns we will show you the nearest match before ordering.
What is dry ridge?
A mechanically fixed ridge that clamps each ridge tile to a batten with screws and a ventilated roll, instead of bedding it in mortar. It is what building regulations expect on new work now.
How many slipped tiles before I should worry?
One is a repair. A handful in the same storm is usually nail fatigue or failed clips and is worth a proper look, because more will follow.
Are concrete tiles worse than clay?
Not worse, different. Concrete is heavier and lower cost, clay lasts longer and suits period houses. We fit both.
Do new tiles need to be clipped?
Yes. Current fixing standards require tiles to be mechanically fixed against wind uplift, which is how we lay every new roof.
How long does a tiled roof last?
Concrete tiles laid on new battens and breathable membrane last for decades, and clay longer. The battens, felt and fixings are what usually fail first, which is why we renew them on every re-tile.
