The roof before we started

A brick semi in Woburn Sands with its original concrete interlocking tiles, heavy with moss and well past its best. Once the first courses came off, the reason was plain: the underlay beneath the tiles had perished and was tearing away along the eaves, so rain that got past a tile had nothing behind it. That is the point where patching stops making sense and a full re-roof is the honest answer.

Scaffold, strip and clear

Scaffold went up front and back first, so every course could be worked safely and the edges stayed protected. The team stripped the old tiles, battens and underlay back to the rafters and cleared the old material down to the drive as they went, rather than leaving it on the roof or in the garden.

New membrane and battens

The whole roof was then covered in a new breathable membrane, a Proctor Air sheet you can see printed on the photographs, lapped from the eaves up. New treated battens were set out over it at the gauge for the new tile and fixed through to the rafters. A breathable membrane lets moisture out of the loft as well as keeping rain out, which is what the old felt never did.

New tiles and the finish

The roof was finished in new grey concrete interlocking tiles, laid course by course down to the eaves and cut in neatly around the chimney. The last photographs are taken from the scaffold before it came down, so you can see the finish up close rather than from the street.
