Preparation
Old grass and weed off, ground broken up, builders' rubble and roots out, topsoil added where there is not enough, then levelled and firmed. Turf laid straight onto compacted clay never takes.
Laying
Turf goes down the morning it is delivered, staggered like brickwork, butted tight with no gaps, cut in around beds and paths, then rolled. You water it heavily for the first fortnight and it knits in.
After it is down
We will tell you when to first cut it, how high to set the mower and what to do in a dry spell. A new lawn that dries out in week two is the one job you cannot rescue.

When is the best time to turf?
Autumn and spring are ideal because the turf knits in without a fight. Summer works if you can water it properly, and we will be straight with you if you cannot.
How soon can I walk on it?
Keep off it for two to three weeks, longer in cold weather, then treat it gently for the first mow or two.
Can you turf over an old lawn?
No. Turf on turf does not root and you end up with a dead layer in between. It has to come off.
