Dig out and sub-base
The old surface and soft ground come out to the depth the drive actually needs for vehicles, then MOT type one goes in, compacted in layers. That is the part that decides whether you get ruts in two winters.
Edges and falls
Edge courses haunched in concrete so the blocks cannot creep sideways, and falls set to a drainage channel or a soakaway so water leaves the drive instead of running at the front door.
Blocks and finishes
Standard block, cobble setts and larger format flags, with a contrasting border or a soldier course to frame it. Kiln-dried sand brushed in and the surface vibrated so it locks up solid.
