Repointing and flaunching
Old mortar raked out and repointed, and the flaunching, the sloped mortar cap the pots sit in, cut off and re-formed. A cracked flaunching soaks the whole stack, and it is a half-day job to put right.
Lead flashings
Front apron, side soakers, step flashing and back gutter, dressed into the brickwork and wedged, not smeared with mastic. Where the old lead is fatigued or somebody has sealed over it, it comes off and is replaced in code-appropriate lead.
Rebuilds and removals
Where the brickwork above the roof line has blown, we take the stack down to sound courses and rebuild it, re-using the pots where they are good. Where a chimney is redundant, we can remove it and tile over, capped and ventilated so the flue does not sweat.

How chimney repairs are carried out
- Access. Scaffold or a chimney stack platform so the stack can be worked safely on all sides.
- Survey the stack. Pointing, flaunching, pots and lead checked and photographed.
- Rake and repoint. Old mortar raked out and the joints repointed in a matching mortar.
- Flaunching. Cracked flaunching cut off and re-formed so water runs off the top.
- Lead. Apron, soakers, step flashing and back gutter replaced and dressed into the brickwork.
- Pots and cowls. Cracked pots replaced or re-bedded, and cowls or vented caps fitted to stop rain, birds and down-draught.
- Photographs. Before and after photographs of every side of the stack, because you cannot see the top of a chimney from the garden.

Do I need scaffolding for chimney work?
For anything more than a quick look, yes, and it makes the job safer and faster. It goes on the quote as its own line.
Can you cap a chimney we do not use?
Yes, with a vented cap so the flue can still breathe. Sealing a flue dead is what causes damp inside the breast.
Can chimney damp come from inside?
Yes. A capped flue with no ventilation sweats inside the breast. We vent the cap so the flue can breathe.
Do you sweep chimneys?
No, that is a sweep's job. We repair the stack, the pots, the flaunching and the lead.
Can a chimney be repaired from a ladder?
