How new guttering is installed, step by step

1. Measure and size. We measure the run and look at the roof area feeding it, so the gutter is big enough for a heavy downpour.
2. Old gutter off. The old gutter and brackets removed, and the fascia behind checked for rot.
3. Set the fall. A string line run from the high end to each outlet, so the gutter falls towards the downpipe rather than sitting dead level.
4. Brackets and gutter. Brackets fixed at the right centres so the run cannot sag, then the gutter clipped in and joints made with new seals.
5. Downpipes. Downpipes clipped tight to the wall, with offsets around sills and a shoe or connector into the gully.
6. Test. Water run through every length so you see it reach the drain.

Gutter types we fit

• Half-round: The standard profile on most houses, in white, black, grey or brown.
• Square line: A cleaner look that suits newer estates.
• Deep flow: More capacity for big roofs and heavy rain, and the usual answer where a gutter always overflows.
• Cast-iron effect: uPVC that looks like cast iron for period houses, with no painting or rust.

How long it takes

Most houses take half a day to a day. A big house with several downpipes or a scaffold takes longer, and you get the days on the quote.

Aftercare

Clear the gutters once a year, twice if trees overhang the house, and look at the joints in heavy rain. A drip at a joint is a five-minute fix if caught early.
