Slate roofing in Milton Keynes

Slate roofing in Milton Keynes needs a different hand to tiling: slates are nailed, not clipped, and one badly set course shows from the pavement for the next fifty years.

New slate roofs

Strip, re-batten to the correct gauge for the slate, breathable membrane, then slate laid to a proper head lap with copper or aluminium nails. Lead soakers and valleys formed rather than bought as a plastic substitute.

Slipped slates

Slate slips because the nail corrodes, not because the slate failed. We refix with a tingle or lift the courses and re-nail, depending on how many have gone. If a third of the roof is dropping slates, re-nailing the lot is the honest answer.

Matching old slate

On a period house the new slate has to sit with the old. We source second-hand reclaimed or match the size and colour as closely as the supply allows, and we will show you a sample on the roof before we cover it.

What is included

  • Natural and fibre cement slate
  • Correct gauge, head lap and nailing
  • Lead valleys and soakers formed on site
  • Slipped slate repairs and re-nailing

Common questions

Is slate more expensive than tile?

Usually yes, on both material and labour, because it takes longer to lay. It also lasts longer and looks right on the houses that were built with it.

Can you replace one slate?

Yes, and that is often all that is needed. A single slipped slate is a short job, not a reason for a quote for a whole roof.

Do you do slate on new extensions?

Yes, and we will match it to the main roof so the extension does not read as an add-on.
