How closeboard fencing is built, step by step

1. Set out the line. A string line run from the house to the bottom of the garden before any post goes in, so the fence stays straight and on the boundary.
2. Concrete posts. Mortice concrete posts set in concrete at the right spacing, plumb in both directions.
3. Gravel boards. Concrete gravel boards set along the base, level or stepped with the ground, to keep the timber off the soil.
4. Arris rails. Treated arris rails fitted into the posts, usually three per bay on a full-height fence.
5. Feather edge boards. Boards nailed to the rails with an overlap, checked for plumb as the run goes along.
6. Capping. Capping rail and post caps fitted to keep water out of the end grain.

When closeboard is the right fence

• Lap panels keep blowing out in wind
• The garden slopes and panels leave gaps underneath
• You want privacy and a fence that stands up to dogs and children
• Timber posts have rotted at ground level
• A long boundary run where strength matters
• You want to replace single boards, not whole panels, when one splits

Closeboard options

• Height: Up to 1.8 metres on most rear boundaries, lower beside a road or footpath.
• Finish: Pressure-treated timber left to silver naturally, or stained to the colour you want.
• Gates: Matching closeboard gates on heavy hinges with a proper latch.
• Concrete or timber posts: Concrete as standard; timber posts set in concrete where the look matters more.

How long it takes

Aftercare

Keep soil and plants away from the boards and give the timber a coat of treatment every few years to keep its colour. The concrete posts and gravel boards need nothing.
