Re-bed or convert
We can take the ridges off, clean them up and re-bed them in fresh mortar, which is the cheaper fix. Or we convert to a dry ridge system, clamped mechanically to a batten with a ventilated roll, which does not crack and adds ventilation to the roof space.
Hips and verges too
Hip tiles and the mortar bedding at the verge fail the same way and for the same reason. If we are up there for the ridge it is usually sensible to sort the lot in one visit rather than pay for access twice.
Why it matters
The ridge is the highest point on a roof and takes the worst of the weather. Once water gets under it, it runs down the underside of the tiles and into the timbers, and you do not see it until the ceiling tells you.

Common questions
How long does mortar on a ridge last?
Ten to fifteen years is common before it starts cracking, less on an exposed roof. Dry ridge was brought in because mortar alone is no longer considered good enough on new work.
Can you do the ridge without scaffolding?
On a bungalow or a low semi, sometimes, with a properly footed ladder and a roof ladder. On anything higher or steeper we scaffold, because it is the ridge, the highest point of the building.
Is dry ridge worth the extra?
Usually yes. It does not crack, it ventilates the roof space and it is the system the manufacturers guarantee.
