Base and bedding
Dig out, compacted sub-base, then a full mortar bed under every slab. Spot bedding is quicker and it is why slabs rock, crack and let water sit under them.
Levels and falls
A fall of about one in eighty away from the house so rainwater runs off, and the finished surface at least 150mm below the damp proof course. Getting that wrong puts water into the wall of the house.
Materials
Porcelain for a flat, low-maintenance finish, Indian sandstone for a softer look, and standard concrete flags where the budget matters. We will show you samples wet as well as dry, because they look different in the rain.

How a patio is laid, step by step
- Set the levels. The finished level marked at least 150mm below the damp proof course, with a fall away from the house.
- Dig out. Soil and old slabs removed to make room for the base and bedding.
- Sub-base. Compacted MOT type 1 for a firm base that will not settle.
- Full mortar bed. Every slab laid on a full bed of mortar, not five spots.
- Lay and check. Slabs laid, tapped down and checked for level and fall as each row goes in.
- Point. Joints pointed so water and weeds stay out.
- Clean down and hand over. Mortar residue cleaned off the surface, the joints checked, and the patio photographed for you before we leave.

Can you lay a patio over an old one?
Only if the old one is sound, level and low enough. Usually it is none of those, so it comes up.

External porcelain is rated for outdoor use and grips well. It is the algae on a neglected patio that makes any surface slippery.
How far should a patio be below the damp course?
At least 150mm, so rain cannot splash or pool above the damp course and into the wall.
Can you add a step or path to the patio?
Yes. Steps, paths and edging are priced on the same quote.
How long before I can use a new patio?
You can walk on it carefully after a day or two once the mortar has gone off, and put furniture on it after about a week.
