Base and bedding
Dig out, compacted sub-base, then a full mortar bed under every slab. Spot bedding is quicker and it is why slabs rock, crack and let water sit under them.
Levels and falls
A fall of about one in eighty away from the house so rainwater runs off, and the finished surface at least 150mm below the damp proof course. Getting that wrong puts water into the wall of the house.
Materials
Porcelain for a flat, low-maintenance finish, Indian sandstone for a softer look, and standard concrete flags where the budget matters. We will show you samples wet as well as dry, because they look different in the rain.
