Why rubber over felt
Felt is laid in layers with joints, and joints are where flat roofs leak. A rubber membrane covers a typical garage in one piece. No heat is used to lay it, which matters on an attached garage or anything near a fence.
The build-up
Old covering off, deck inspected and replaced where it is soft, firrings to set the fall, insulation if the space below is heated, then the membrane bonded down with the edges dressed into drip and gutter trims.
Finishing details
Kerbs around rooflights, upstands at abutments, lead or trim at the wall junction and a proper outlet into the gutter. The details are what separate a rubber roof that lasts from one that lifts at the corner in two years.

How an EPDM rubber roof is laid
- Strip and inspect. Old covering off, deck checked board by board.
- New deck and fall. Soft boards replaced, firrings fixed so water drains, and insulation laid if the room below is heated.
- Trims. Drip trims and gutter trims fixed around the edge.
- Bond the membrane. The EPDM sheet is laid out, allowed to relax and bonded to the deck with adhesive, no heat used.
- Details. Upstands, corners, rooflight kerbs and the outlet finished, and the edges dressed into the trims.
- Outlet and gutter. The membrane dressed into the gutter trim or outlet so water leaves the roof cleanly, then the roof photographed for you.

Getting the EPDM detail right
- Fully bonded: The membrane is glued across the whole deck so wind cannot lift it.
- Insulated deck: Insulation boards under a new deck for rooms below, built to the current standard on request.
- Rooflights and lanterns: Kerbs built in and the rubber dressed up and over.
- Upstands and wall junctions: Membrane turned up the wall and finished under a cover flashing or lead, which is where most flat roof leaks start.
How long it takes
A single garage is a day. A larger extension roof is one to two days. EPDM needs a dry deck, so we book around the forecast.

Common questions
Can EPDM be walked on?
For maintenance, yes. If it is a balcony or a regular walkway we would spec fibreglass or add a walkway layer, and we will tell you which at the quote.
Can you fit a rooflight at the same time?
Yes. A kerb goes in while the deck is open, which is the cheapest time to do it, and the membrane dresses up and over.
What colour is it?
Black is standard and it is what nearly everyone has. Fibreglass is the option if you want a grey or a colour to match.
Is EPDM the same as a rubber roof?
Yes. EPDM is the synthetic rubber membrane people mean when they say a rubber roof.
Can EPDM go over my existing felt?
We do not lay it over old felt. The old covering comes off so the deck can be checked and the membrane bonds properly.
Why does no heat matter on an EPDM roof?
EPDM is bonded with adhesive and laid cold, so there is no flame near timber, fascias, fences or a neighbour's property. It is one reason we lay it instead of torch-on felt.
